Literati: Stop Motion of Imagination
One frame at a time...

One frame at a time...
Literati Kids delivers books to young readers, so their ad needed to capture what happens when a kid gets lost in a good story. We took our cue from the children's book Nim's Island and set out to build the kind of world a kid disappears into halfway through a chapter. Literati entrusted us with all the creative decisions on this campaign, so we were able to flex our animation storytelling techniques and get lost in imagination ourselves.

To make imagination feel handmade, we used pixelation, a stop-motion technique where real people are the subjects, posed and photographed one frame at a time. We shot over two days in our studio, carefully crafting over 700 highly designed images that come to life around our(very patient) actress. We delivered the final piece in multiple formats, with 15- and 30-second cuts, so it was ready to run wherever Literati needed it.

Literati was so happy with the result that they used it to launch their first-ever TV ad campaign, which is a pretty good run for a spot we made initially as a social ad. It also won a Telly Award for Animation in a Creative Project. And we all got a great lesson in patience and a new respect for this style of animation.
